How to Pick Your Domain Name
One of the first things you’ll need when setting up your new Website, is a domain name. And it is vital that you select a domain name that is “Keyword Rich”. For example, take our domain name www.EducoWebDesign.com, it is made up of three integral words. Our company name, “EDUCO” and it also has “Web” and “Design” which are key descriptors of what we do and the field of work we’re in.
It is best to keep your domain to about 2-4 keywords. A main keyword supported by 2-3 sub-keywords. Anything longer than that and you start to open yourself up to misspellings and other errors.
Sometimes it is worth to buy several domain names. Especially, since domain names are only $10/yr. (The cost of domain names is comparable to the cost of land when Europeans began immigrating to America. Land was being given away. Similarly now can you buy a potentially invaluable domain name for a very small investment.)
If you get hooked up with a domain broker becoming a domain reseller could be very lucrative, but we’ll discuss that in another blog.
Once you have selected the domain name(s) that you want to purchase make sure that you secure your MAIN domain name (the one you plan on directing people to most frequently) for a 5 year term. This is because search engines give more weight and better ranking to sites that have greater longevity. If it looks like you plan on being around for a while Search Engines view you as more relevant. It wont make or break your ranking but it is one of the many variables that Google factors into its algorithm to calculate PageRank.
