Why You Need to Think About Mobile Phones / Devices When You Build Your Website
Up until the introduction of the iphone and the blackberry, you could predict that most of the traffic to your Website would be from visitors sitting at their desktop or laptop, and using one of several major browsers.
That has all changed though. Nowadays users are coming from a variety of situations, using countless devices to reach your website. And now the iPad will further add to the already numerous avenues people can navigate to your site from.
Nielsen, the well-known metrics company, recently released some data that the iPhone was the most common mobile device. Some of the other top mobile devices in order of popularity were the BlackBerry 8300 series, Motorola RAZR V3, and the LG VX9100.
This growth of mobile web devices connecting people to the Web means that you can no longer assume users are at their desktops or laptops with large screens.
So not only do you need to ensure that your website renders properly on these mobile browsers, you now need to also consider your whole user experience, and possibly think about altering your marketing message to make it more congruent. This can be as simple as making your site less text and heavy and incorporating more images. For some businesses you might want to consider developing two versions of your Website. One site for users coming from traditional devices and a another for those coming from mobile devices.
